Dunning software alternative for SaaS on Stripe with a flat fee
A dunning software alternative is the tool you switch to when your current dunning setup costs too much, recovers too little or does more than you need. For a SaaS company billing on Stripe, RevRescue replaces the payment recovery part of tools like Churnkey, Churn Buster, ProfitWell Retain, Baremetrics Recover or FlyCode with retries timed by decline code and card update outreach, for a published fee from 99 USD a month.
No signup and no billing access needed for the estimate.
Why teams replace the dunning software they have
Nobody shops for a second dunning tool for fun. The search usually starts with one of four moments. The renewal quote went up because MRR crossed a tier or because the vendor prices on churn volume. A performance deal now takes a share of revenue that would have come back anyway. The team bought a retention suite for its cancel flows and realized it mostly needed declined cards paid. Or Stripe's built-in retries are still the only thing running and the past due list keeps growing.
Each of those calls for a different answer, and not every one of them points to us. If cancel flows save more revenue than payment recovery for you, keep a suite that has them. If you bill outside Stripe, RevRescue will not fit. But if you bill on Stripe, most of your loss is involuntary churn from declined cards, and you want a price you can read before a call, a focused dunning software tool usually costs less and is simpler to run.
How the main dunning tools compare on price and fit
Published prices and models from each vendor's pricing page or help center, checked in October 2026. Terms change and some are set by sales, so confirm before you sign. Our full breakdown with yearly cost by MRR is in dunning software pricing.
| Tool | Pricing model | Starting price | Where it wins | Switch to RevRescue if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Churnkey | Tiers by monthly churned revenue | 250 USD a month billed yearly | Cancel flows and payment recovery in one suite | You mainly need declined cards paid and the churn volume tiers keep climbing |
| Churn Buster | Flat fee by MRR tier, about 0.1% of MRR per product | 269 USD a month, bundle 430 USD | Dunning plus cancel flows, more billing systems | You bill on Stripe and want a lower flat fee for recovery alone |
| ProfitWell Retain | Flat for smaller companies, performance for larger | 500 USD a month | Merchants on its parent billing platform | The 500 USD floor is a large share of what recovery returns |
| Baremetrics Recover | Add-on to analytics plans | Recover listed at 129 USD plus the analytics plan | Teams that already pay for Baremetrics analytics | You do not want to buy an analytics suite to get recovery |
| FlyCode | Share of revenue recovered above a baseline | No published rate | No fee if nothing is recovered above baseline | Your volume is growing and a revenue share would outgrow a flat fee |
| Stripe Smart Retries | Included with Stripe Billing | No separate fee | Zero setup, already on | Hard declines and card updates are left unresolved |
| RevRescue | Flat fee by MRR band | 99 USD a month, half price yearly | Stripe billing, fixed known cost, high value hand-off | You bill on Stripe and want a published flat fee |
What you get when you switch to RevRescue
- One retry schedule per invoice. RevRescue takes over the retry clock from Stripe, so two systems never retry the same card. Insufficient funds waits for the likely payday, processor errors retry within hours, lost or stolen cards are never retried. See smart payment retries.
- Card updates without a login. Hard declines get a short email with a one click card update link, an SMS for customers who agreed to texts, and an in-app banner. The new card is written back to Stripe.
- Emails that match the decline. Each decline type gets its own message from your brand and Reply-To address, covered on Stripe dunning emails.
- Fewer failures next month. Cards that expire before the next renewal get a reminder ahead of time, see the card updater.
- A person for the big accounts. Past due accounts above an MRR threshold you set go to a hand-off queue for someone on your team.
- A fee that does not move with recovery. Starter 99 USD up to 50,000 USD MRR, Growth 299 USD up to 250,000 USD, Scale 799 USD up to 1M USD, Enterprise 1,999 USD. Every plan is on the pricing page.
When a dunning software alternative is the wrong move
Switching costs a billing cycle of attention, so it is worth being honest about when not to. If voluntary cancellations cost you more than declined cards, a tool with cancel flows, offers and exit surveys will save more money than any retry engine, and Churnkey or Churn Buster are built for that. If you bill through a platform other than Stripe, look at vendors that support it. If your current tool recovers well and the fee is a small share of what comes back, the gain from moving may be smaller than the effort.
The quick test is to put last month's recovered revenue next to last month's invoice from your vendor. If the fee takes more than about a fifth of what came back, or you cannot tell which recoveries the tool caused, run the numbers in the recovery calculator and compare. How to switch dunning software without losing a renewal
-
1
Export what is open
Note every past due invoice in your current tool and where its sequence stands, so nothing is dropped or emailed twice.
-
2
Connect Stripe
Create a restricted Stripe key and add it to RevRescue. It reads subscriptions, invoices and charges, nothing is sent yet.
-
3
Turn the old sequences off
Stop the previous tool's retries and emails for this Stripe account, and set Stripe's own retries so only RevRescue owns the schedule.
-
4
Set messages and thresholds
Brand the email, SMS and banner templates and choose the MRR threshold for hand-off to your team, then start.
-
5
Compare a full cycle
After one billing cycle, put recovered revenue next to your old vendor's last invoice and the RevRescue plan fee.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to dunning software I already use?
It depends on what you are replacing. For a SaaS company on Stripe that mainly loses revenue to declined cards, a focused recovery tool with a flat fee, such as RevRescue from 99 USD a month, usually costs less than a retention suite. If cancel flows matter more, Churnkey or Churn Buster fit better.
How much does dunning software cost?
Published prices start around 99 USD a month for flat fee tools like RevRescue, 250 USD for Churnkey Starter billed yearly, 269 USD for one Churn Buster product and 500 USD for ProfitWell Retain. FlyCode and larger Retain deals take a share of recovered revenue instead, with rates set by sales.
Can I switch dunning software in the middle of a billing cycle?
Yes, as long as only one tool contacts each customer. List the past due invoices first, turn off the old tool's retries and emails for that Stripe account, then connect the new one. Invoices already in a sequence pick up from their current state instead of starting over.
Is Stripe Smart Retries a good enough dunning tool?
For a small account it can be. Smart Retries is included with Stripe Billing and retries soft declines well, but it uses Stripe's basic emails and does little for hard declines that need a new card. Most teams add a tool once the past due list holds real revenue every month.
Does RevRescue have cancel flows?
No. RevRescue handles involuntary churn, meaning renewals lost to declined cards, expired cards and unpaid invoices. If voluntary cancellations are your bigger leak, use a cancel flow tool next to it or pick a suite that includes both.
Which billing systems does RevRescue support?
Stripe only. It connects with a restricted API key and writes updated cards and payment results back to Stripe. If you bill on another platform, choose a vendor that supports it.
