Stripe Smart Retries alternative that times retries by decline code

A Stripe Smart Retries alternative is a recovery tool that takes over or adds to the retries Stripe Billing runs on failed subscription charges. Smart Retries is free with Billing and picks retry times from network data, but it only retries the card already on file and stops at hard declines. RevRescue times retries with your own customer history and chases a new card for a flat 99 USD a month.

Where Stripe Smart Retries stops working for you

Smart Retries is a good default and most Stripe Billing accounts should start with it. Stripe uses signals from across its network, such as how many devices have used a card in recent hours and what time of day similar charges succeed, to pick retry moments inside a window you set. The recommended default is 8 attempts within 2 weeks, and you can stretch the window to 1 month or 2 months.

The limits show up once failed payments become a real line in your MRR report. Smart Retries only charges the payment method already on file, in a fixed priority order, so a card that has been closed or replaced is never going to clear no matter how clever the timing is. For hard declines such as lost_card, stolen_card or authentication_required, Stripe keeps counting scheduled attempts but does not run them until the customer adds a new card. Getting that new card is the actual recovery work, and it happens in email, SMS and inside your product, not in the retry engine.

The other gap is context. Smart Retries does not know that this customer paid late on the 1st twice last year, that the account is a 2,400 USD annual contract owned by a named rep in your CRM, or that the invoice is one of three past due for the same company. That is why teams with 30,000 USD MRR and up start looking for smart payment retries that use their own data, plus the outreach around them.

Run one retry engine, not two

When you move to RevRescue, it takes over the retry clock. You turn Smart Retries off in Stripe under Billing, Revenue recovery, Retries, and keep whichever rule you prefer for the subscription status after the final attempt, cancel, mark unpaid, leave past due or pause. From then on every attempt is scheduled by decline reason, and hard declines go straight to a card update request instead of waiting in a queue of attempts that will never run.

Letting two systems retry the same invoice is the one setup to avoid. Card networks limit repeated attempts on one card for one transaction, and going over those limits can bring fees and closer review of your merchant account. It also makes the results impossible to read, because you cannot tell which attempt brought the money back.

The switch is reversible. If you ever want Stripe back in charge, turn Smart Retries on again and disconnect RevRescue, and Stripe picks up the open invoices on its next scheduled attempt. Our Stripe integration page covers the connection with a restricted key.

What RevRescue adds around each failed charge

  • A reason for every attempt. Insufficient funds on a debit card waits for the next likely payday in the customer's time zone. A processor error is tried again within hours. A stolen or closed card is never retried.
  • Card update requests that land. A short email with a one click link, an SMS for customers who agreed to texts on the Growth plan and up, and a banner the next time they log in. The new card goes straight back to Stripe.
  • Before the card fails. Expiring cards get a reminder in the month before expiry, which removes a whole class of declines. See card updater.
  • A person for the accounts that matter. A past due annual contract becomes a task for its owner in your CRM, not the fourth automated email.
  • The money you can see. The dashboard shows open failed charges, what came back this month and what the plan cost, so the tool has to prove itself every month.

When Stripe Smart Retries alone is enough

If your MRR is under roughly 10,000 USD, most failed charges are soft declines and you have turned on Stripe's failed payment and expiring card emails, Smart Retries plus those emails will recover a fair share at no extra cost. Adding a paid tool at that size often costs more than it returns. Run your numbers through the recovery calculator first.

A dedicated tool starts paying off when failed payments run into thousands of dollars a month, when a big part of them are hard declines that need a new card, when you have high value accounts that deserve a human, or when you bill across more than one system. If you are still deciding which vendor fits, our best dunning management software roundup compares the main options, and the Baremetrics Recover alternative page covers the outreach-only route that keeps Smart Retries in charge.

    Review what is open

Past due subscriptions and failed charges appear within minutes, grouped by decline reason with the amount at risk.

  3. 3

    Turn Smart Retries off

Switch Smart Retries off in Stripe so RevRescue owns the retry schedule and no invoice is retried twice.

  4. 4

    Set the messages

Edit the email, SMS and banner templates, set the MRR threshold for CRM hand-off, then start the sequence.

  5. 5

    Compare after one cycle

Check recovered revenue against your last month on Smart Retries alone and against the plan fee.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stripe Smart Retries worth it?

Yes, for most Stripe Billing accounts it is the right starting point because it is included with Billing and beats a fixed retry ladder. Its limit is that it only retries the card on file. Once hard declines and expired cards make up a large share of failed payments, the recovery comes from getting a new card, which needs outreach Smart Retries does not do.

How many times does Stripe retry a failed payment?

Stripe recommends 8 attempts within 2 weeks with Smart Retries, and you can set the window to 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 1 month or 2 months. With a custom schedule you can set up to 3 retries, each a number of days after the previous attempt.

Can you turn off Stripe Smart Retries?

Yes. In the Stripe Dashboard go to Billing, Revenue recovery, Retries, switch Smart Retries off and either set a custom schedule or let another tool own retries. Your rule for what happens after the final attempt, cancel, mark unpaid, leave past due or pause, still applies.

Does Stripe Smart Retries cost extra?

No. Smart Retries comes with Stripe Billing, which is priced as a share of the billing volume it handles. You pay nothing separate for the retries, but you also cannot change how the model decides beyond the retry count and window.

What is the best alternative to Stripe Smart Retries?

For SaaS on Stripe that wants retries timed by decline code and payday, plus card update requests and CRM hand-off, RevRescue fits from 99 USD a month. Outreach-only tools such as Baremetrics Recover keep Smart Retries in charge and add emails. Larger B2C brands sometimes buy managed services priced on a share of recovered revenue.

Can I use RevRescue and Stripe Smart Retries together?

Run one retry engine at a time. When RevRescue owns recovery, turn Smart Retries off so the same invoice is not charged twice on two schedules, since card networks limit repeated attempts on one card. Stripe still handles the payment itself, and you can switch Smart Retries back on whenever you like.
