ProfitWell Retain alternative for Stripe SaaS with a flat monthly fee
A ProfitWell Retain alternative is another tool that recovers failed subscription payments without Retain's pricing, which its own help center describes as a flat fee starting at 500 USD a month for smaller companies and a performance-based fee for larger ones. RevRescue covers the payment recovery side of Retain for SaaS on Stripe, retries timed by decline code plus card update outreach, for a published fee from 99 USD a month.

Why SaaS teams look for a ProfitWell Retain alternative
ProfitWell Retain was one of the first products built only to win back failed subscription payments, and for years it was the default answer for SaaS companies on Stripe. In May 2022 ProfitWell was bought by a merchant-of-record billing company for a reported 200M USD, and Retain now sits inside that company's product line. Since then the questions we hear from teams evaluating it are less about whether it recovers money and more about the deal and the pace of the product.
Three things come up again and again. First, price. Retain's help center says the pricing is flat-fee for smaller companies starting at 500 USD a month and performance-based for larger companies, with the exact terms set by the sales team. For a SaaS at 30,000 USD MRR, 500 USD a month is a big slice of what recovery returns. Second, control. Competing vendors such as Churnkey and FlyCode describe Retain as slow to change, with customization often going through support. Treat that as their marketing, but test it in a demo. Third, fit. Retain is now strongest for merchants who also bill through its parent platform, while a team that bills directly on Stripe mostly needs one thing done well: get the declined renewal paid.
RevRescue is built for that second group. It works on Stripe only, the price is on the pricing page, and you can connect it without a sales call. If you are pricing Retain right now, our ProfitWell Retain pricing breakdown shows what each model costs at your MRR.

What a 500 USD starting fee means at your MRR
A typical SaaS sees somewhere around 5 to 7 percent of monthly charges fail, and a good recovery tool wins back well over half of those. At 20,000 USD MRR that is roughly 1,200 USD failing and perhaps 750 USD recovered a month, so a 500 USD fee would take two thirds of the gain. At 50,000 USD MRR the same fee is about a quarter of what comes back. Only near 100,000 USD MRR does it start to look small.
RevRescue Starter is 99 USD a month up to 50,000 USD MRR, or about 50 USD a month billed yearly. Growth is 299 USD up to 250,000 USD MRR. The fee does not move inside the band, so a better recovery month is all yours. Above that size, compare our Scale plan with Retain's performance quote over twelve months, not one, because a share of recovered revenue keeps growing with your billing. Run your own numbers in the recovery calculator.
What RevRescue does with each failed Stripe charge
- Retries with a reason. Insufficient funds waits for the likely payday in the customer's time zone, a processor error is retried within hours, and a lost or stolen card is never retried. Details on our smart payment retries page.
- A new card when the old one is dead. Hard declines go straight to a short email with a one click card update link, an SMS for customers who agreed to texts, and a banner the next time they log in. The new card is written back to Stripe.
- Emails that match the decline. Each decline type gets its own message from your brand with your Reply-To, see Stripe dunning emails.
- Fewer failures in the first place. Cards that expire before the next renewal get a reminder in the month before, covered on the card updater page.
- A person for the big accounts. A past due annual contract lands in a hand-off queue for someone on your team instead of a fourth automated email.
Who should stay with ProfitWell Retain
Stay with Retain if you already bill through its parent merchant-of-record platform, where it is part of the same stack, or if you bill through Braintree, Maxio or Recharge, which RevRescue does not support. It also makes sense if you want cancellation flows and payment recovery from one vendor and your finance team prefers a performance deal it has already negotiated.
Pick RevRescue if you are a SaaS company billing on Stripe, you want to see the full price list before a call, and you want the fee to stay flat as you grow. If you need cancel flows as well, Churnkey covers them, and our Churnkey alternative page explains how its tiers compare. If Stripe's built-in retries are your current setup, read the Stripe Smart Retries alternative page first.

Frequently asked questions
How much does ProfitWell Retain cost?
Retain's help center says pricing is flat-fee for smaller companies, starting at 500 USD a month, and performance-based for larger companies. It does not publish the performance rate or the size at which one model switches to the other, so the exact number comes from its sales team. Ask for the full twelve month cost at your current MRR.
What is the best ProfitWell Retain alternative for SaaS on Stripe?
For a SaaS company on Stripe that wants a published, flat price, RevRescue fits from 99 USD a month and covers retries by decline code, card update outreach and high-value hand-off. Churn Buster charges a flat fee by MRR and Churnkey prices in tiers and adds cancel flows. FlyCode and Butter Payments charge a share of recovered revenue.
Is ProfitWell Retain still available?
Yes. Retain is still sold after ProfitWell was acquired in 2022, now as part of its parent company's billing product line, and its help center still lists setup guides for Stripe, Braintree, Maxio and Recharge. Competing vendors say development has slowed since the acquisition, so check recent release notes in a demo.
Does ProfitWell Retain work with Stripe?
Yes. Retain has a Stripe setup guide and runs its recovery emails and reminders alongside Stripe Billing. Make sure only one system retries each invoice, because Stripe's own retries and a second schedule on top can break card network retry limits. RevRescue connects to Stripe only, with a restricted API key.
Can I run Retain and RevRescue at the same time?
Not on the same customers. Two tools emailing one customer about one invoice looks broken and makes results impossible to attribute. Turn Retain's recovery off for the Stripe account you move, or test RevRescue on a separate Stripe account first and compare a full billing cycle.
Does RevRescue have cancellation flows like Retain?
No. RevRescue handles involuntary churn, the renewals lost to declined cards, expired cards and unpaid invoices. If voluntary cancellations are your bigger leak, a cancel flow tool such as Churnkey is the better buy, and many teams run one next to a payment recovery tool.
