Stripe dunning emails
Stripe dunning emails and failed payment emails that get invoices paid
Stripe dunning emails are the messages a subscription business sends after a Stripe charge fails, asking the customer to fix the card so the invoice gets paid. Stripe can send one standard email per failed attempt. RevRescue sends a different email for each decline reason, under your brand, with the next retry date and a one click card update page, and stops as soon as the invoice is paid.
No signup and no billing access needed for the estimate.
What Stripe sends on its own when a payment fails
Stripe Billing has customer emails built in. In the revenue recovery settings you can switch on an email after each failed card payment, a reminder one month before a default card expires, a link when a payment needs 3D Secure confirmation, and renewal and trial end reminders. All of them use your Stripe branding settings, and the failed payment email links to a Stripe hosted page where the customer updates the card and pays the open invoice.
That is a sensible baseline, and if you have nothing switched on today, turning it on is the first thing to do. The limits show up once failed payments are a real number on your MRR report. The wording is Stripe's standard template, the same email goes out whether the bank said insufficient funds or the card was reported stolen, the message does not say when the next retry will happen, and every failed attempt triggers another near identical email. Customers learn to ignore it by the third one.

Stripe default emails compared with RevRescue dunning emails
Based on Stripe's documentation for Billing customer emails and on our product. Stripe changes its settings from time to time, so check your own dashboard too.
| Stripe built-in emails | RevRescue | |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Each failed card payment, plus expiring card, 3D Secure and renewal reminders | Each failed charge, chosen by decline reason, plus expiring card, 3D Secure and open invoice reminders |
| Message by decline reason | One standard failed payment email | Separate emails for a soft decline, a card that cannot be charged again, and a payment that needs confirmation |
| Next retry date in the email | No | Yes, in the customer's time zone |
| Wording | Stripe template with your logo and colors | Your own subject and body for every trigger, with merge fields for name, amount and card |
| Sender | Your Stripe public business details | Your brand name as the sender, replies go to the address you set in the dashboard |
| Repeat protection | Another email after every failed attempt | The same message to the same customer at most once every 20 hours |
| Final notice | Not a separate email | Sent only after real retries, and it states how many attempts were made |
| SMS and in-app | No | SMS with recorded consent on Growth and up, plus an in-app banner |
One email for each reason a Stripe card is declined
The decline code decides what the customer has to do, so it decides the email. Asking someone with a stolen card to wait for a retry wastes a week, and asking someone with a temporary insufficient funds decline to replace a perfectly good card annoys them for no reason. RevRescue reads the code on every failed Stripe charge and picks one of these messages.
- Payment did not go through. For soft declines such as insufficient funds or a processor error. It tells the customer the bank declined the payment, gives the date of the next automatic retry and offers a secure page to pay now with another card. Retry timing is covered on smart payment retries.
- Please update your card. For hard declines such as a lost, stolen or closed card, where retrying the same card cannot work. It goes out straight away and asks for a new card.
- Please confirm your payment. For charges that need 3D Secure or another bank check. The link opens the confirmation step instead of a card form.
- Your card expires soon. Sent in the month before the default card expires, before anything fails. See card updater for how this fits with network card updates.
- Last notice. Sent only after the card was actually retried, with the real number of attempts, and an invitation to reply if something is wrong.
What every RevRescue dunning email includes
Each email carries the amount due, your brand name and a working link. The link opens a secure card update page connected to your Stripe account. The customer enters a new card, it becomes the default payment method in Stripe and the open invoice is charged right away, so the subscription stays active without waiting for the next retry. If an email would go out without your brand name or without a working link, it is held back and logged instead of sent.
Replies go to the address you choose, so a customer who answers "my company changed cards, can you invoice us instead" reaches a person on your team. Large accounts can skip the automated tail entirely. Above an MRR threshold you set, a failed annual contract goes to a hand-off queue for your account manager, who knows the customer better than any template does.
The sequence stops on its own. When the invoice is paid, through a retry, the card page or a payment made elsewhere, no further dunning emails go to that customer. Our failed payment email templates show example wording you can start from.

Who pays for better Stripe dunning emails
The teams that buy this are SaaS companies billing on Stripe with roughly 10,000 USD MRR or more, where failed payments run to a few thousand dollars a month and the built-in email is the only thing between a declined card and a cancelled account. A few hundred dollars of extra recovery a month covers Starter at 99 USD, and Growth at 299 USD adds SMS with consent for customers who never open billing email.
If you are deciding between this and a broader tool, compare it with our dunning software overview or the Stripe Smart Retries alternative page, which covers the retry side in more depth.
Frequently asked questions
Does Stripe send dunning emails?
Yes. Stripe Billing can email the customer after each failed card payment, one month before a default card expires and when a payment needs 3D Secure confirmation. You switch them on in the revenue recovery email settings, and they use your Stripe branding with a link to a Stripe hosted page to update the card.
Can I customize Stripe failed payment emails?
Partly. Stripe applies your logo, colors and public business details, but the message itself is Stripe's standard template and it does not change with the decline reason. To write your own subject and body per trigger, or to add SMS, you need a dunning tool that sends the emails for you.
How many dunning emails should I send after a failed payment?
Three to four emails over two to three weeks is a common range for SaaS. Send the first within an hour of the failure, one around each retry, and a final notice before the subscription is cancelled. Stop the moment the invoice is paid.
Should I turn off Stripe emails if I use RevRescue?
Yes, turn off Stripe's failed payment emails so the customer does not get two messages about the same invoice. You can keep Stripe receipts and other billing emails as they are.
Do RevRescue dunning emails come from my domain?
They go out with your brand name as the sender, and replies go to the address you set in the dashboard, so customer answers reach your team. Each email links to a secure card update page connected to your own Stripe account.
How much do Stripe dunning emails cost with RevRescue?
Emails are included in every plan. Starter is 99 USD a month up to 50,000 USD MRR and Growth is 299 USD up to 250,000 USD MRR, with half price when billed yearly. There is no share of recovered revenue.
