Dunning Software Pricing and What Each Tool Costs

Estimate what failed payments cost you each month
Two numbers, no signup and no billing access needed.
Dunning software for SaaS costs from roughly 99 USD a month for a flat fee tool to 1,300 USD or more a month for tiered retention suites. Some vendors take a share of recovered revenue instead. Your actual bill depends on MRR, monthly churn volume, contract term, and whether you also buy cancellation tools.
If you bill on Stripe and are budgeting for dunning software, start with what failed payments cost you after Stripe's existing recoveries. This guide compares dunning software pricing for a SaaS finance team choosing a tool now. RevRescue publishes this comparison and sells one of the products, so the decision criteria include where competitors justify their higher fees.
The three pricing models
Flat fee by MRR. Your subscription sits in a revenue band. RevRescue and Churn Buster use this model, which makes spending predictable until you cross a tier boundary. Better recovery within the same band does not increase the fee. The downside is paying the same amount during a quiet month, and potentially paying more when growth moves you into another band.
Tiers by monthly churn volume. Churnkey prices around the subscription revenue at risk each month. This suits a team buying recovery and cancellation tools together, since the budget follows the retention problem. But MRR alone cannot tell you the price. Ask how the vendor measures churn volume and handles a temporary increase before treating a quote as a fixed annual budget.
Share of recovered revenue or performance. Retain uses performance pricing for larger companies. FlyCode charges only on revenue recovered above a baseline. That can align the fee with results, but the definition of recovery matters as much as the rate. A rising bill may reflect genuine gains, or simply more payment volume. Get an example invoice showing the baseline calculation before signing.

Churnkey includes cancel flows alongside payment recovery. Churn Buster offers both products separately or as a bundle. If voluntary cancellations are material, compare those capabilities against the cost of buying another tool. Retain and Churn Buster also support other billing systems, which matters if your recovery needs extend beyond Stripe.
What dunning software costs at your MRR
Use an illustrative assumption that about 6% of MRR fails each month and a good tool recovers about 60% of that amount. These are planning inputs, not a forecast or a promised recovery rate. The table shows monthly fees and their yearly totals, using RevRescue's monthly plan fees before its annual discount.
For Churnkey only, assume monthly churn volume equals the failing amount shown, with no additional voluntary cancellation volume. That puts the smaller examples below Starter's threshold and the larger examples into Core. Your actual churn volume can change that selection.
| MRR | Failing per month | Recovered per month | RevRescue (monthly plan fee) | Churn Buster (from 269) | Churnkey Starter/Core (assumed churn volume) | Retain (from 500) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20,000 USD | 1,200 USD | 720 USD | 99 USD/mo; 1,188 USD/year | From 269 USD/mo; from 3,228 USD/year | Starter from 250 USD/mo billed yearly; from 3,000 USD/year | From 500 USD/mo; from 6,000 USD/year |
| 50,000 USD | 3,000 USD | 1,800 USD | 99 USD/mo; 1,188 USD/year | From 269 USD/mo; from 3,228 USD/year | Starter from 250 USD/mo billed yearly; from 3,000 USD/year | From 500 USD/mo; from 6,000 USD/year |
| 100,000 USD | 6,000 USD | 3,600 USD | 299 USD/mo; 3,588 USD/year | From 269 USD/mo; from 3,228 USD/year | Core from 500 USD/mo billed yearly; from 6,000 USD/year | From 500 USD/mo; from 6,000 USD/year |
| 250,000 USD | 15,000 USD | 9,000 USD | 299 USD/mo; 3,588 USD/year | From 269 USD/mo; from 3,228 USD/year | Core 700 USD/mo billed yearly (up to 20,000 USD churn volume); 8,400 USD/year | From 500 USD/mo; from 6,000 USD/year |
Competitor figures are starting floors annualized for comparison, not exact quotes for those MRR levels. Churn Buster's MRR tier may raise the fee, Churnkey's tier follows your real churn volume, and Retain may quote performance terms instead. RevRescue's yearly billing halves its totals to 594 USD for Starter and 1,794 USD for Growth.
The fee as a share of recovery exposes the tradeoff. At 20,000 USD MRR, 99 USD takes about 13.8% of the illustrated 720 USD recovered, while a 500 USD floor takes about 69.4%. At 250,000 USD MRR, 299 USD takes about 3.3% of 9,000 USD. These ratios use total recovery; profitability depends on how much comes back beyond what Stripe already recovers.
Hidden costs to ask about
Dunning management software pricing is only comparable once the contract and operating costs are visible. Ask each shortlisted vendor for these details in writing.
- Setup fees. Confirm whether implementation, migration and campaign configuration cost extra. FlyCode publishes no setup fee; do not assume that every quote has the same terms.
- Minimum terms. Check the payment schedule, renewal notice and cancellation rules. Churnkey Intelligence requires a quarterly commitment when you do not choose yearly billing.
- SMS charges. Ask whether messages are included or charged separately, how usage is measured, and whether your expected volume changes the quote. RevRescue offers SMS on Growth and up.
- MRR tier changes. Ask when the vendor measures revenue, when a higher tier begins, and whether a lower MRR later reduces the fee.
- Performance baselines. Have sales define which recoveries would have happened anyway, how the baseline changes, and whether you can audit the calculation.
- Retry ownership. Leaving Stripe retries active alongside another scheduler can create overlapping attempts. Agree which system owns retries and customer messages before launch.
Record the approved fee, contract term and renewal owner when finance logs the vendor invoice in its expense management software alongside the rest of its software spend.
Is dunning software worth the cost?
Dunning software is worth the cost when the extra revenue it recovers beyond your existing Stripe setup exceeds its fee and operating effort. Compare incremental recovery over a consistent invoice cohort, then subtract the subscription and messaging costs. A higher total recovery number alone does not prove the tool paid for itself.
Ask a vendor to separate invoices recovered by another retry from invoices recovered after a customer updated payment details. Then compare the results with your previous process. Cancel flow savings can support a suite's price, but keep them separate when evaluating failed payment recovery software pricing.
How much does dunning software cost for a small SaaS?
A small SaaS on Stripe can budget 99 USD a month for RevRescue Starter up to 50,000 USD MRR, or 594 USD a year with yearly billing. Other published starting points include Churnkey at 250 USD a month billed yearly and Churn Buster at 269 USD a month for one product.
Below that MRR ceiling, decide whether SMS or cancellation tools are necessary before comparing subscriptions. A lower entry price does not help if the plan omits a channel you need. Equally, paying for a retention suite makes little sense when failed cards are the only problem you are trying to solve.
Is Stripe's built-in dunning enough?
Stripe Smart Retries may be enough if retries and basic emails recover an acceptable amount and your team can handle the remaining accounts. It has no separate fee beyond Stripe Billing, so measure that baseline before adding another subscription.
Consider a dedicated tool when unresolved declines, card updates or manual follow-up leave an identifiable gap. Ask to see how the proposed workflow handles different decline codes and coordinates outreach. The Stripe Smart Retries alternative comparison helps you assess whether that gap supports another bill.
How to choose dunning software by budget
For a recovery-only budget on Stripe, price the RevRescue band that covers your current MRR and your expected growth. Use monthly billing while assessing fit if annual prepayment would make an unproven purchase harder to reverse.
If cancellation losses also need attention, read Churnkey pricing and Churn Buster pricing. Compare Churnkey's included cancel flows against Churn Buster's bundle, using actual churn volume for the former and the quoted MRR tier for the latter.
For performance proposals, use ProfitWell Retain pricing and FlyCode pricing to prepare baseline questions. FlyCode costs nothing if it recovers nothing above baseline, but you still need its unpublished rate to budget a successful month. The best dunning management software guide broadens the shortlist if your requirements differ.
Check the current RevRescue plans on pricing, then use the recovery calculator with your own failed payment volume. Bring the result and your Stripe recovery baseline to each vendor so the quote answers the same budget question.
