Card updates

Card updater for subscriptions that keeps cards current

A card updater refreshes a stored card when the bank issues a new number or expiry date, so subscription renewals keep working. Card network updater services handle many cases automatically, but not all banks take part. RevRescue fills the gap with pre-expiry reminders and a one-click card update page for every card the network cannot refresh.

How network card updater services work

Visa, Mastercard and other networks run account updater programs. When an issuing bank reissues a card with a new expiry date or a new number, it can report the change to the network. Payment processors that take part query the network on behalf of their merchants and replace stored card details before the next charge. Stripe, for example, updates many saved cards this way automatically, and it is one reason card-based subscriptions keep running after a card expires.

Network tokens work along similar lines. The stored token stays the same while the bank keeps the underlying card details current, which tends to improve approval rates on renewals.

What automatic card updates do not catch

  • Not every issuer reports changes to the networks, and participation varies by country and bank type.
  • Cards that were closed, rather than reissued, have no replacement to pass on, for example when a customer switches banks.
  • Lost and stolen cards are often blocked without an update reaching the merchant in time for the next renewal.
  • Corporate and virtual cards are frequently cancelled by a finance team and replaced with a new card from a different program.
  • Some updates arrive after the renewal has already failed, so the first charge is still declined.

Pre-expiry reminders stop failures before they happen

Every stored card has a known expiry month. RevRescue scans for cards that expire before the next renewal and, if the network has not already refreshed them, sends the customer a short reminder ahead of time with a link to the card update page. Annual plans get the reminder earlier, since a failed yearly renewal removes twelve months of revenue at once.

The card update page customers actually finish

The update link opens a hosted page branded with your logo. The customer sees their plan, the amount due if there is one, and a single card form. There is no login, no password reset and no hunt through account settings. As soon as the card is saved, it becomes the default payment method in your billing system, and if an invoice is open, RevRescue charges it right away.

  1. 1

    Customer opens the link

From an email, SMS or the in-app banner. The link is signed and expires after use.

  2. 2

    Enters the new card

Card details go directly to your billing provider. RevRescue never stores full card numbers.

  3. 3

    Card becomes default

Stripe, Chargebee, Paddle or Shopify is updated with the new payment method.

  4. 4

    Open invoice is retried

Any past due invoice is charged immediately and the reminders stop.

Part of a complete recovery setup

Card updates prevent the failures you can see coming. For the rest, RevRescue uses smart payment retries and timed reminders, which together make up dunning software. You can read how this reduces involuntary churn or how card data is handled on the security page.

All features are included in every plan, priced flat by MRR band from 99 USD a month, never as a share of recovered revenue. See pricing or run the free recovery estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What is a card account updater?

It is a service run by the card networks that passes new card numbers and expiry dates from issuing banks to merchants, so stored cards keep working after they are reissued.

Does Stripe update expired cards automatically?

Stripe updates many saved cards through network updater programs, but not every bank takes part, so some cards still fail at renewal.

Why do I still get expired card declines?

The issuer may not report updates, the card may have been closed rather than reissued, or the update arrived after the charge. A pre-expiry reminder catches these cases.

Does RevRescue store card numbers?

No. The card form sends details directly to your billing provider, and RevRescue only keeps a reference to the payment method.
