Chargebee Retention Pricing and What Failed Payment Recovery Costs

Estimate what failed payments cost you each month
Two numbers, no signup and no billing access needed.
Chargebee does not publish a price for Chargebee Retention or its Revive payment recovery engine. Access is through a demo request, and Revive is offered to Chargebee Billing customers. Third-party listings quote figures, but they disagree, so treat any number as a starting point for a sales call rather than a budget.
If you are a finance lead or founder pricing Chargebee Retention, this page sets out what is verifiable, what to ask, and how to compare the quote with a tool that publishes its fee. RevRescue sells a flat fee recovery tool for Stripe, so we also say when Chargebee is the right call.
What Chargebee Retention includes
Chargebee Retention bundles churn management with payment recovery. The recovery part, Revive, scores each failed payment on more than 200 signals, including issuer behavior, time zone, funding cycles and retry history. It then decides to retry now, retry later or ask the customer for a new card. Chargebee's page also describes a rules-based Smart Dunning mode with up to 12 retries driven by gateway error codes, and a custom mode with a fixed schedule of up to 5 retries. Revive can be switched on per gateway and payment method, and it respects a ceiling of 12 retries per invoice.
Stripe and Braintree appear as supported gateways. That is the gateway under Chargebee Billing, not a way to use Revive without it. If your invoices live in Stripe Billing, confirm in writing that you qualify before you go further.
Is there a public price
Not from Chargebee. Its Revive page gives no price and points to a demo. Third-party software directories list figures that differ by source, and some describe session-based pricing with an allowance and overage. Chargebee's own churn management pages mention a free starter tier and custom enterprise pricing. We could not tie any one number to Chargebee's own pricing for the recovery engine, so we do not repeat them as fact.
That matters for budgeting. A quote you cannot see before a call, for a product bundled with billing, is hard to compare with anything else.
Questions to ask Chargebee sales
- What is the price of Revive alone, separate from the Billing plan and the rest of Retention?
- Is the fee fixed, based on sessions, or a share of recovered revenue? What happens when volume grows?
- What is the contract length, and what is the renewal uplift?
- Which of my failed payments does Revive not touch, for example processor errors or lost cards?
- Can I export my customer and payment history if I leave?
- What did customers at my MRR recover in their first full billing cycle?
Get the twelve month total in writing. The monthly number tells you little if the contract has volume steps.
Yearly cost by MRR for the published alternatives
| Tool | Pricing model | Yearly cost at 50,000 USD MRR |
|---|---|---|
| Chargebee Retention | Not published, demo request | Ask sales |
| ProfitWell Retain | Flat from 500 USD a month for smaller companies, performance-based for larger | From 6,000 USD |
| Churn Buster | 269 USD a month single product, 430 USD bundle, about 0.1% of MRR | From 3,228 USD |
| RevRescue Starter | 99 USD a month up to 50,000 USD MRR, half price on yearly billing | 1,188 USD, or about 594 USD yearly billed |
The Retain and Churn Buster lines come from the vendors' own pages (see our ProfitWell Retain pricing and Churn Buster pricing pages for the method). Check each page again before you buy, because prices change.
What failed payments cost you without a tool
Assume about 6% of MRR fails each month and a good tool wins back more than half. At 20,000 USD MRR that is 1,200 USD failing and about 750 USD recovered a month. At 50,000 USD it is 3,000 failing and about 1,850 recovered. At 100,000 USD it is 6,000 failing and about 3,700 recovered. These are planning inputs, not guarantees, and your decline mix decides the real figure. Enter your own numbers in the recovery calculator.
A fee is worth paying when it is a small share of that recovered amount. If a quote takes a third of the gain at your size, you are paying for the suite, not for the recovery.
When Chargebee is the right choice
If your subscriptions, invoices and tax already run in Chargebee Billing, Revive works on that data, and adding a separate tool means a second system. Choose Chargebee too if you want cancellation flows and recovery from one vendor and you have a price you accept.
Choose a Stripe-based tool if you bill on Stripe, want to see the price first, and want the cost to stay flat as you grow. Our Chargebee Retention alternative page compares the two side by side, and dunning software explains the Starter and Growth plans.
Is Chargebee Retention worth it
It is worth it when you already pay for Chargebee Billing and the recovery engine lifts collections by more than its fee. Measure that on one full billing cycle with a clear baseline: failed amount, recovered amount, and amount still unpaid after the last retry. If the lift is small, the bundle is expensive for what it adds.
When the recovered money lands, someone has to match it to bank deposits. Teams that close monthly often turn the bookkeeping export into board-ready financial statements once recovered revenue is posted.
Does Chargebee have a free plan
Chargebee's own churn management pages mention a free starter tier and custom pricing for enterprise. Which features sit in each tier changes, so ask sales which tier includes Revive. Do not assume the free tier includes payment recovery.
Can I use Chargebee Revive with Stripe
Revive supports Stripe as a gateway under Chargebee Billing. That means you invoice in Chargebee and charge through Stripe. It does not mean Revive can sit on top of Stripe Billing. If you invoice in Stripe, a Stripe-based tool such as RevRescue or another recovery product is the direct fit.
How to decide in three steps
- Pull last quarter's failed charges and sum what stayed unpaid after the final retry. That is your yearly loss.
- Ask Chargebee for a written twelve month quote for recovery alone.
- Compare it with a flat fee. If one tenth of the loss is more than the plan price, trial a flat fee tool for a cycle and measure recovered revenue against the fee.
