Stripe Billing Pricing for Failed Payment Recovery and When to Add a Tool
By RevRescue team · · 5 min read
Estimate what failed payments cost you each month
Two numbers, no signup and no billing access needed.
Stripe Billing includes Smart Retries, automatic reminder emails and up to three recovery automations in its price, which is 0.7% of the billing volume it processes on the pay-as-you-go plan. There is no separate dunning fee. The cost that matters is the failed payments Stripe cannot recover, and that is what a dedicated tool is priced against.
If you are evaluating Stripe Billing, or already on it and wondering whether failed payment recovery deserves its own budget, this page puts numbers on both sides. RevRescue sells a recovery tool for Stripe, so we also say where Stripe alone is enough.
What Stripe Billing charges
On Stripe's pricing page (checked October 2026) the pay-as-you-go plan is 0.7% of the volume processed through Billing, with no recurring fee. Stripe also offers monthly plans on an annual contract with a volume allowance and a lower rate above it, and custom pricing for large volumes. Card processing fees are separate. Check the page for your region, since Stripe lists different currencies and plan amounts by country.
Included in Billing at no extra line item:
- Smart Retries, which picks retry times using Stripe network data.
- Automatic reminder emails for failed and late payments.
- Up to three recovery automations, such as different dunning policies for customer segments.
So the direct answer to "what does Stripe charge for dunning" is nothing on top of Billing. For a SaaS billing 50,000 USD a month through Billing, the 0.7% works out to 350 USD a month, and that covers invoicing, subscriptions, tax tools and the recovery features together.
What failed payments cost you after Stripe's recovery
Smart Retries and reminder emails recover many failures, but they have limits. Retries only charge the card on file, so a closed or replaced card is never fixed by timing. The emails are generic, and Stripe does not text the customer or hand a large account to a person on your team. Our Stripe failed payments guide lists the decline codes where retries cannot help.
Use a planning assumption, not a promise: if about 6% of MRR fails each month and Stripe recovers most soft declines, the leftover is mostly hard declines and ignored emails. Say a third of that failing amount stays unpaid.
| MRR | Failing per month (6%) | Left unrecovered (about a third) | Lost per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20,000 USD | 1,200 USD | 400 USD | 4,800 USD |
| 50,000 USD | 3,000 USD | 1,000 USD | 12,000 USD |
| 100,000 USD | 6,000 USD | 2,000 USD | 24,000 USD |
| 250,000 USD | 15,000 USD | 5,000 USD | 60,000 USD |
These are illustrative inputs. Your decline mix decides the real figure, and the recovery calculator lets you enter your own.
When a recovery tool pays back
A tool earns its fee when it recovers more per month than it costs. RevRescue's flat plans are Starter at 99 USD a month up to 50,000 USD MRR and Growth at 299 USD up to 250,000 USD MRR, with half price on yearly billing. At 50,000 USD MRR with the table's 1,000 USD left unrecovered, Starter pays back if it wins back about one tenth of what Stripe leaves behind. At 20,000 USD MRR the margin is thinner, and Stripe alone with its emails turned on is a reasonable choice.
The break-even gets easier as the share of hard declines grows, because that is the part Smart Retries cannot touch. The Stripe Smart Retries alternative page shows what changes when a tool owns the retry clock, and Stripe dunning emails compares Stripe's built-in messages with per-decline emails.
Costs people forget when they compare
The 0.7% looks small until volume grows. Because it applies to billing volume, the Stripe fee rises with every renewal you save. A flat recovery fee does not. At 250,000 USD MRR, 0.7% is 1,750 USD a month, while the same account sits in a single flat plan whatever it recovers. That is the main difference between a percentage-of-volume model and a flat band, and it is why finance leads look at both before a renewal.
Two other costs are easy to miss. The first is engineer time: custom recovery logic built on webhooks means someone owns retry rules, email copy and the card update page forever. The second is customer time. A customer who gets one generic email and then loses access is a customer who may not come back, and a lost account costs the full lifetime value, not one invoice. Teams that track the share of churn caused by payment failure, often called involuntary churn, often find it is a meaningful share of all cancellations. Our involuntary churn page explains how to measure it on your own data.
Also check which part of your failures are authentication or bank flags on large charges. Those need a person to call the customer, and no retry schedule fixes them, so they belong in a hand-off queue rather than a fourth email.
Should you pay for dunning on top of Stripe Billing?
Skip it if your MRR is under about 10,000 USD, most failures are soft declines and you have switched on Stripe's failed payment and expiring card emails. Add a tool if failed payments run to thousands of dollars a month, a large share are hard declines, you have annual accounts that deserve a person, or finance wants to see recovered revenue against a fee each month.
If you are comparing vendors, dunning software pricing has published prices and yearly cost by MRR, and the best dunning management software roundup covers who each tool fits.
Is Stripe's dunning free?
Stripe does not charge a separate fee for Smart Retries or reminder emails, but they come with Billing, which costs 0.7% of billing volume on pay-as-you-go. If you take payments without Billing, you do not get these recovery features at all and must build retries yourself or use a tool.
Does Stripe Billing include revenue recovery?
Yes. Retries, reminder emails and recovery automations are part of Billing. They cover the card on file and generic messages. They do not run SMS, per-decline card update outreach or an account hand-off queue, which is where dedicated tools differ.
How much does Stripe Billing cost per month?
On pay-as-you-go it is 0.7% of Billing volume, so 350 USD on 50,000 USD of billed volume. Monthly plans exist on annual contracts with volume allowances. Prices vary by region, so read the current page before budgeting.
How to decide in three steps
- Pull last quarter's failed charges from Stripe and split them into soft and hard declines.
- Sum what stayed unpaid after the final retry. That is your yearly loss figure.
- Compare it with a flat fee. If one tenth of the loss exceeds the plan price, trial the tool for a cycle and measure recovered revenue against the fee.
You can start with RevRescue and read the result in the dashboard after one billing cycle. When the recovered money comes in, finance can reconcile it against the deposits with bank reconciliation software at month end.
