Payment recovery

Subscription payment recovery tool for Stripe subscriptions

A subscription payment recovery tool retries failed renewal charges at better times based on decline reason, asks customers to update cards through a secure page, follows up by email and SMS, and reports recovered revenue. RevRescue does this for Stripe subscriptions at a flat monthly fee, never a share of recoveries, with SMS on Growth and up.

What a subscription payment recovery tool does after a renewal fails

A declined renewal is an unpaid invoice, not proof that the customer wants to leave. Subscription payment recovery starts by reading the bank response. Insufficient funds may call for a later retry. A lost or stolen card needs a new payment method. Sending both customers the same reminder leaves the next action unclear.

RevRescue reads the decline code on every failed charge, times retries by decline type, and sends separate emails under your brand with the next retry date. Customers get a secure one click card update page. The same message reaches the same customer at most once every 20 hours. Expiring card reminders and unpaid invoice reminders cover problems before and after the renewal date.

The figures alongside are a hypothetical budgeting example, not a measured result or recovery promise. Compare recovered revenue with the plan fee, then ask how much Stripe would have recovered already. Our smart payment retries guide explains retry timing, while card account updater guidance covers expiring cards.

Failed payment recovery tools compared by how they charge

Compare failed payment recovery tools by the bill you receive as well as the features. A revenue share makes the fee follow recoveries. An MRR band sets the price by business size. A managed service includes a team tuning the process, while a cancel flow suite addresses cancellation decisions alongside billing recovery.

Ask each vendor what counts as recovered revenue and what determines your next price tier. For closer comparisons, read our FlyCode alternative comparison and Churnkey alternative comparison. Confirm current competitor terms before buying.

Stripe failed payment recovery and where its built-in tools stop

Stripe failed payment recovery includes Smart Retries, which uses AI and network signals to choose retry times. You choose the number of attempts within 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 1 month or 2 months. Stripe recommends 8 tries within 2 weeks. A custom schedule allows up to 3 retries at chosen day offsets.

Stripe does not retry without a payment method or after non-retryable codes such as incorrect_number, lost_card, pickup_card, stolen_card, revocation_of_authorization, revocation_of_all_authorizations, authentication_required, highest_risk_level and transaction_not_allowed. Those need a new payment method. After the final retry, your settings determine whether the subscription is canceled, marked unpaid, left past due or, when eligible, paused.

Stripe can email after each failed card payment, remind customers one month before a default card expires, and send a hosted link for 3D Secure confirmation. Emails use Stripe branding settings and a Stripe hosted page. The failed payment email is standard regardless of decline reason. RevRescue adds separate messages by reason, consented SMS and an in-app banner on Growth and up, plus recovery reporting. See Stripe dunning email options and our guide to failed payments in Stripe.

How RevRescue recovers subscription payments

Give one system ownership of retry timing before starting recovery. Review the customer messages alongside the schedule so your team can explain what happens after a decline. RevRescue connects only to Stripe.

  1. 1

    Connect Stripe read access

Create a restricted Stripe key with read access and paste it into RevRescue. The first Leak Scan then shows which open invoices and failed renewals need attention.

  2. 2

    Turn off Stripe Smart Retries

Disable Smart Retries for the account moving to RevRescue so one system owns retry timing. Review failed payment emails too, to avoid duplicate outreach.

  3. 3

Choose the action by decline reason

RevRescue reads the decline code on every failed charge and picks a retry or card update outreach. Emails include the next retry date; SMS requires recorded consent on Growth and up.

  4. 4

    Review recovered revenue

Recovered revenue shows on the Revenue at Risk dashboard. Use the ROI panel to compare results with the flat plan fee, and review invoices that still need attention.

Which plan fits your MRR

Choose your MRR band, then check account and outreach needs. Every plan charges a flat fee, never a percentage of recovered revenue. Yearly billing is 50 percent off the monthly price.

Who buys a subscription payment recovery tool

For a founder, finance lead or RevOps owner at 10,000 USD MRR or above, the buying question is practical. Which unpaid renewals need another attempt, which need a customer response, and who handles the important accounts?

  • B2B SaaS on monthly card billing. Keep a declined renewal from becoming an unresolved invoice while the customer continues to expect access.
  • Consumer subscription apps billed through Stripe. Reach customers by email, with consented SMS and an in-app banner available on Growth and up.
  • Usage based SaaS with large invoices. Use the high-value hand-off queue on Growth and up when a person should handle the account.
  • Teams that outgrew Stripe defaults. Compare decline-specific messaging, recovery reporting and the ongoing fee using our dunning software guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best failed payment recovery tool?

The best tool fits your Stripe workflow, decline mix and preferred pricing model. RevRescue suits SaaS teams that want retries by decline reason, branded outreach and a flat monthly fee. Compare its reporting and customer messages with Stripe defaults before deciding whether the additional subscription earns its cost.

How do I recover failed subscription payments in Stripe?

Recover failed subscription payments by retrying temporary declines and asking customers with hard declines for a new payment method. Start with Stripe revenue recovery settings, then review messages and subscription outcomes. RevRescue coordinates decline-based retries, secure card updates and follow-up while reporting recovered revenue in its dashboard.

How much does payment recovery software cost?

RevRescue costs from 99 USD a month, with flat plans based on MRR and yearly billing at 50 percent off. Growth is 299 USD, Scale is 799 USD and Enterprise is 1,999 USD monthly. Compare account limits and outreach features on the payment recovery pricing page before choosing.

Can Stripe recover failed payments automatically?

Yes, Stripe Smart Retries automatically retries eligible failed payments at times chosen using network signals. You set the attempt count and recovery window, and Stripe can email customers after failures. Missing payment methods and non-retryable decline codes require a new payment method instead of another attempt on the same card.

Do I need to turn off Stripe Smart Retries?

Yes, turn off Stripe Smart Retries when RevRescue takes over retry timing for that account. One system should own the schedule so attempts and customer messages follow the same plan. Review failed payment email settings during setup as well, so Stripe and RevRescue do not send duplicate outreach.

How much of failed revenue can be recovered?

The recoverable amount depends on your decline mix and whether customers provide a usable payment method. Soft declines such as insufficient funds often clear on a later retry, while hard declines need a new card. Use the subscription payment recovery calculator for a planning estimate, then compare it with actual results.
