Paddle Retain alternative for ProfitWell Retain users who want a flat fee
A Paddle Retain alternative is a tool that recovers failed subscription payments without Retain's pricing or its tie to Paddle. Retain, formerly ProfitWell Retain, uses a flat fee from 500 USD a month for smaller companies and performance pricing for larger ones. RevRescue does the same recovery job on Stripe, Chargebee, Shopify and Paddle for a flat 99 to 1,999 USD a month.
No signup and no billing access needed for the estimate.
Why teams look for a Paddle Retain alternative
ProfitWell Retain earned its reputation as a hands-off dunning product. You connected billing, it ran retries and payment emails, and a monthly report told you what came back. After Paddle bought ProfitWell, the product became Paddle Retain and picked up cancellation flows and prompts that move monthly customers to annual plans. For companies that bill through Paddle it is now built in, and Paddle describes it there as included at no extra cost.
The teams that shop for a replacement are usually in one of three positions. Some bill on Stripe, Chargebee or Shopify and do not want their recovery tool owned by a billing vendor they do not use. Some have grown to the point where performance pricing costs more each quarter, because the fee rises with every dollar recovered. And some started on the flat fee, which Paddle's help center lists from 500 USD a month, and found that number hard to justify at 20,000 or 40,000 USD of MRR.
None of that makes Retain a bad product. It means the fit depends on where you bill and how you want to pay. RevRescue is built for the buyer who wants the recovery work done, on whichever billing system they already have, for a price that does not move when results improve.

What flat fee pricing changes at each size
Performance pricing sounds safe, since you only pay when money comes back. The catch is that most recovered payments would have come back with any competent retry schedule, and you pay the same share on those as on the hard ones. The better the tool performs and the more you grow, the larger the invoice. A flat fee turns recovery into a fixed line in the budget, and every extra dollar recovered stays with you.
RevRescue prices by the MRR band you are in. The price inside a band does not change with the amount recovered, the number of retries or the number of emails sent.
| Plan | MRR band | Monthly | Yearly, per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | Up to 50,000 USD | $99 | $49 |
| Growth | Up to 250,000 USD | $299 | $149 |
| Scale | Up to 1,000,000 USD | $799 | $399 |
| Enterprise | Above 1,000,000 USD | $1,999 | $999 |
Where RevRescue covers more than card recovery
- Retries you can inspect. Each failed charge is read by decline code first. Soft declines such as insufficient funds are retried when the odds are better. Hard declines such as a closed or stolen card are never retried and go straight to a card update request. The logic is on smart payment retries.
- Invoices that are not paid by card. Annual contracts and net terms invoices get reminders before and after the due date, a payment link and escalation as they age. See unpaid invoice collection.
- A person on the big accounts. Above an MRR threshold you choose, a past due account becomes a task for its owner in your CRM, so someone calls before the subscription lapses.
- Leak Scan. Checks billing data for metered usage never invoiced, discounts that should have ended, old customers still on old prices and seats that are under-billed. See revenue leakage.
- One number to judge it by. The Revenue at Risk dashboard shows what is exposed, what was recovered this month and how that compares with the plan cost.
When Paddle Retain is the better choice
If you sell through Paddle Billing, Retain is already part of what you pay for, and adding a second recovery tool on top would mean two systems retrying the same cards. Stay with it unless you need invoice follow-up or leak detection, in which case run RevRescue for those jobs and leave card retries to Retain.
Retain is also the stronger pick when voluntary churn is your main problem. Its cancellation flows put a discount, a pause or a plan change in front of a customer who has clicked cancel, and its term optimization nudges monthly subscribers to annual billing. RevRescue does not build cancel flows. It works on revenue that is lost without anyone deciding to leave, which is the involuntary churn side. If you want a cancel flow specialist instead, the Churnkey comparison covers that category.
How to switch from Retain without retrying cards twice
-
1
Connect billing
Add Stripe with a restricted key, or connect Chargebee, Shopify or Paddle through the app connection. Nothing is charged or emailed at this point.
-
2
Check what is open
Past due subscriptions, failed charges and unpaid invoices appear on the dashboard within minutes, with the amount each one puts at risk.
-
3
Carry over your wording
Paste the payment emails your customers already recognize into the sequence templates and set the timing per step.
-
4
Switch on a single day
Turn off recovery in Retain and start the RevRescue sequence the same day, so only one system retries each card. Card networks limit repeated attempts.
-
5
Compare after one cycle
After a full billing cycle, compare Recovered this month and the plan cost with your last Retain invoice.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Paddle Retain cost?
Paddle's help center describes a flat fee for smaller companies that starts at 500 USD a month and performance pricing for larger companies, with the exact rate set in a sales conversation. For Paddle Billing customers, Paddle describes Retain as included at no extra cost. Pricing at the time of writing, check their site for current terms.
Is ProfitWell Retain the same as Paddle Retain?
Yes. ProfitWell Retain was renamed Paddle Retain after Paddle acquired ProfitWell. It is the same recovery product, now with cancellation flows and annual plan prompts added and offered as part of Paddle Billing.
Does Paddle Retain work with Stripe?
Paddle publishes Retain setup guides for Stripe, Braintree, Maxio and Recharge alongside Paddle Billing. If you bill on Stripe and want a tool that is not owned by another billing vendor, RevRescue connects to Stripe with a restricted key in about ten minutes.
What is the best Paddle Retain alternative?
It depends on what you need replaced. For failed payment recovery with a flat published price, plus unpaid invoice follow-up and billing leak detection, RevRescue fits. For cancellation flows, look at a cancel flow specialist such as Churnkey.
Does RevRescue take a percentage of recovered revenue?
No. Every plan is a flat monthly fee set by your MRR band, from 99 USD a month, or 49 USD a month billed yearly. The fee does not change with how much is recovered.
Can I use RevRescue if I bill through Paddle?
Yes. Paddle is a supported connection. Turn off card recovery in one of the two tools so each failed payment is retried by a single system.
