Shopify integration

Shopify subscription failed payments, recovered automatically

Shopify subscription failed payments happen when a recurring order cannot be charged to the saved card. RevRescue connects to your store through an app connection, watches failed billing attempts on subscription contracts, retries them at better moments and sends customers a simple link to update their card, so the subscription keeps shipping instead of quietly lapsing.

Why subscription orders fail on Shopify stores

A Shopify subscription is a contract that creates a new order on a schedule, whether that is a monthly coffee box, a supplement refill or a replacement filter. Each order is a fresh charge on a card the customer saved weeks or months ago. Cards expire, get replaced after fraud alerts, or simply run short a few days before payday. When the billing attempt fails, the order does not ship, and many stores never find out why a loyal subscriber disappeared.

For consumer subscriptions this involuntary churn can be a meaningful part of total churn, because buyers rarely notice a declined charge for a product they did not actively reorder. The customer still wants the product. They just need a nudge and an easy way to fix the card.

What RevRescue does when a Shopify billing attempt fails

  • Reads the failure reason. Each failed billing attempt carries an error such as insufficient funds, expired card or a card that needs authentication. RevRescue uses it to decide between a retry and a card update request.
  • Times the retry. Soft failures are retried near the likely payday and in the customer local morning, within card network limits, using the smart timing described on smart payment retries.
  • Sends a card update link. The message opens a page where the customer replaces the card in a few taps on a phone, then the next attempt runs on the new card.
  • Shows a banner on your store. Logged-in customers with a past due subscription see a short notice in their account area until it is fixed.
  • Texts only with consent. SMS goes only to your own customers who agreed to texts, with opt-out in every message.
  • Warns before cards expire. Subscribers whose card expires before the next order get a reminder a few weeks ahead, explained on card account updater.

A recovery sequence built for consumer subscribers

Consumer subscribers respond differently from B2B buyers. Messages need to be short, mobile first and friendly, and the window is usually shorter because the next box has a ship date. A sensible default looks like this, and you can change every step.

A recovery sequence built for consumer subscribers
Day Action Channel
0 Billing attempt fails, reason classified, order held None
1 Short note that the order is waiting, with update link Email
2 to 4 Retry near payday or local morning Payment
4 Reminder with product photo and update link Email, store banner
6 Text with the update link, if consent exists SMS
7 to 10 Final retries within network limits Payment
12 Last notice, then pause or cancel as you choose Email

How the Shopify connection works

  1. 1

    Enable the Shopify connection

From your RevRescue workspace, open Integrations and choose Shopify. The app connection is enabled for your workspace and you approve access in your store admin.

  2. 2

    Import open failures

RevRescue reads subscription contracts and recent failed billing attempts, then lists them with value and next step on the Revenue at Risk dashboard.

  3. 3

    Brand your messages

Add your logo, colors and sender name so reminders look like your store, not a payment system.

  4. 4

    Switch the sequence on

Choose what happens after the last attempt, pause or cancel, and turn it on.

Works alongside your subscription app

RevRescue does not replace your subscription app or checkout. Products, selling plans, discounts and shipping rules stay exactly where they are. It focuses on what happens after a recurring charge fails, and on bringing back subscribers who left with win-back campaigns. Pricing is a flat monthly fee by subscription MRR band, starting at 99 USD a month or 49 USD a month billed yearly, never a percentage of recovered orders. See the pricing page, or get a free one-time recovery estimate first.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Shopify subscription payments fail?

Most failures come from expired or replaced cards, insufficient funds and issuer fraud checks. Very few are customers who wanted to cancel.

Does Shopify retry failed subscription payments?

Retry behaviour depends on your subscription app and its settings. RevRescue adds retries timed per failure reason plus card update messages across email, SMS and an on-store banner.

Will customers have to log in to update their card?

No. The link in each message opens a card update page directly, which works well on phones.

Can I pause instead of cancel after failed payments?

Yes. You choose the final action, and paused subscribers can be reached later with a win-back message.

Do I need a developer to connect Shopify?

No. The connection is enabled from your workspace and approved in your Shopify admin.
